Hi, and welcome to Dozers world. The world according to a Bulldogs point of view.
This is Dozer, our 2 year old English Bulldog. Dozer joined our family in September 2008. He was a rescue Bully that found his way into our hearts, and has changed our home and hearts in such a positive way.
My husband and I have always wanted to get a Bulldog as a family pet, and we knew one day we would, but we already had Molly, our 9 year old Mini Schnauzer, and Biscuit, our 6 year old Chihuahua so we didn't think the time was right quite yet. But things happen for a reason and we were made aware of a male bulldog that was in desperate need of a home, because his previous family grew tired of the upkeep and needs of a Bulldog (yes, people can make me so mad sometimes) So when we learnt that Dozers days were numbered, we decided to bring him home and try things out for a week end, and see how he got on with our other dogs. Much to our surprise, it went quite smooth. Though Molly was a little put out because she thought she was as tolerant as she had to be because of sharing the limelight with Biscuit for the past 6 years.
Dozer was quite the handful when we first brought him home, but my husband and I could see that he was worth the effort that we had to put into him, but it wasn't going to be the easiest adjustment. Dozer had NO social skills. He didn't have any manners, and really only thought that the way to get his own way was to be a bully, and he perfected that trait to a T. So we seeked the help of a professional Behaviourist to come to our home and work with Dozer, and teach him the right way to behave. Not only did she teach him the basics, she taught me how to be assertive and in control. This was very hard for me, because even though Dozer is not a big dog, he is a strong dog, and that intimidated me a little and Dozer knew it. So week by week, I grew more confident, and Dozer grew manners and respect. I thought this was going to take months and months, but to my surprise, it took only 6 weeks of daily training.
Bulldogs are extremely smart dogs, but they do things on their own pace. It's not like they don't hear you, they just have the attitude of "I'll get around to it in a minute" Once you understand that this is their nature, then you become more tolerant of their relaxed way of life. Actually, it becomes addictive!
Not only are Bulldogs extremely cute looking in their own way, but they are quite a complicated dog health wise. I often say that Bulldogs are Mother Natures spare parts dogs. They snort when they walk, they snore when they sleep, and yes, they pass gas and seem rather proud of it. But even though they are a vets dream dog because of the amount of times you will find yourself at one with a Bulldog, they are also a very lovable, loyal, and terribly funny dog to be around.
I am learning about Bulldogs everyday. I don't think it will ever stop either. Just when you start to relax and think you know what's going on, they turn around and surprise you again. This is why I made this web page. It has been a constant trial and error when it comes to even the smallest things like toys. Some toys look so cool, and they are, but a lot of them are just not Bully proof. The most innocent looking stuffed bear can be a choking hazard to a Bulldog. So with the help of Dozer, he has agreed to be toy tester and a treat tester, so I can compile a list of "Dozer approved" toys & treats.
I guess Dozer could say that it's a tough job, but some bully's got to do it!
